How to watch Coming 2 America wherever you are
Coming 2 America (opens in new tab) is out now—exclusively available on Amazon Prime Video.
To watch, all you need is an Amazon Prime subscription. If you don't currently have one, you can just sign up to a free 30 day trial (opens in new tab) giving you access to movies and shows straight away.
That's right, if you're a first-time subscriber, you get to watch Eddie Murphy's new movie—as well as all the other great content on Amazon Prime Video—completely free, for an entire month.
What to expect from Coming 2 America
The sequel sees Eddie reprise his role as the newly-crowned King Akeem Joffer, 30 years after he and his best friend Semmi left the fictional African country of Zamunda and made their way to New York in 1988’s classic comedy, Coming to America (opens in new tab).
Akeem has spent the past three decades happily married to his wife Lisa but must now travel back to America—this time, to find his long lost son, Lavelle.
Prior to the release, Eddie revealed that he was beyond pleased with the new movie, telling Antonio Banderas in Variety‘s Actors on Actors (opens in new tab) video series:
"I’m just over the moon with how it’s turned out. I don’t know what it is about that movie, but that’s the one movie that I’ve done that, like, on Halloween people dress up like the characters, and people always say lines from that movie to me."
He added: "We figured out a way to connect it, and that’s what we’re doing now."
So far, the film has received a great reception from fans on Twitter while critics have also praised it. Empire (opens in new tab) described it as "a colourful, likeable re-spinning, replete with big dance sequences… a string of cameos, obvious messaging … and gentle skewering of the Black experience, from gentrification to eschewing ideas around primitivism." Meanwhile, The Evening Standard (opens in new tab) validated the positive Twitter feedback and ultimately claimed that "Coming 2 America gets a few things wrong, yet beats the odds by getting so much right."
The cast of Coming 2 America
Fans of the original will be pleased to hear that Coming 2 America not only brings back Eddie Murphy but all of our other favourites, including Arsenio Hall, who is back as Semmi, James Earl Jones as King Jaffe Joffer and Shari Headley who plays Lisa. John Amos will also be back as Akeem's father-in-law and former employer, Cleo McDowell
You can also expect to see some new faces including Wesley Snipes, who takes on the new role of General Izzi, Jermaine Fowler, who is joining the cast as Akeem's American son, Lavelle and Leslie Jones who plays Lavelle's mom, Mary. Meanwhile Tracey Morgan joins as Uncle Reem and If Beale Street Could Talk star Kiki Layne appears as Akeem's oldest daughter, Meeka.
As shown in the trailer, Teyana Taylor also makes a cameo as a character named Bopoto.
