*Warning: Major spoilers ahead!*

Why did Candy Montgomery kill Betty?

Real-life Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore first met at The First United Methodist Church of Lucas in Wylie, Texas. Their young daughters were friends, with the mothers regularly hosting each other's children for sleepovers, which the Hulu series shows.

Their familial entanglement became dramatically knottier when Candy began cheating on her husband, Pat (played by Timothy Simmons in the miniseries), with Betty's husband, Allan Gore (portrayed by Pablo Schreiber). According to Texas Monthly, the seeds for the affair began in the summer of 1978, after spending time together at church choir and on the volleyball court, and the two began seeing each other every other week at a local motel.

Betty Gore was pregnant with her and Allan's second child—Candy even threw her a surprise baby shower at the church—and when their daughter was born in late 1979, he guiltily ended his affair with Candy and neither of their spouses are the wiser to the infidelity. Or so they thought.

Fast-forward to June 13, 1980, the day of Betty Gore's murder. With Allan gone to St. Paul, Minnesota, on business, Candy went to Betty's house to pick up a bathing suit for the Gores' daughter, whom she was babysitting. There, Betty confronted her about the affair, to which Candy admitted. According to Candy Montgomery's court testimony, Betty walked to the garage and grabbed an ax, warning Candy to never sleep with Allan again, and the two got in a physical struggle for control of the weapon, leaving Betty dead in the Gores' washroom.

After Allan hadn't heard from his wife all day, he sent friends and neighbors to do a wellness check on his wife, during which they discovered her body, which had reportedly been struck by an ax 41 times.
