Despite snagging second place on Love Island 2022, Gemma and Luca have officially called it quits, announcing their breakup to fans on Instagram—here's what went down!

For those who need a recap, original islanders Gemma Owen and Luca Bish were paired up with different Love Island contestants at the beginning of this year's series (Davide Sanclimenti and Paige Thorne), but quickly realized they had feelings for one another and coupled up with each other in week three of the show.

It was pretty much smooth sailing for 19-year-old Gemma and 23-year-old Luca from then on—despite a few post-challenge arguments, and Luca's tensions with fellow contestant Tasha Ghouri—and they went on to get second place in the final.

Now though, despite Luca's recent 'promposal'-esque gesture to ask Gemma to finally be his girlfriend, the pair have split after just three months...

Are Gemma and Luca still together?

Sadly, following Paige and Adam's split, we're down to just three Love Island 2022 couples that are still together as Luca and Gemma join the growing list of failed villa romances.

Taking to Instagram on November 16th, Gemma announced their decision to break up on her story, with a statement that read: "To all my followers. I wanted to let you know that Luca and I are no longer in a relationship.

"It wasn’t an easy decision but this ultimately is what is best for us both right now. Many of you have been on this journey with us from the very beginning and I want to thank you for your continued support as we start new chapters. Love always. Gem."

Luca followed up a few hours later with his own statement that said: "Switched my phone back on after taking some time out to clear my head after an emotional afternoon to thousands of messages and news articles about my breakup.

"I would have liked some time to process this privately but as you all now know sadly Gemma and I made the mutual decision earlier today to go our separate ways. We have been on such a journey together and have made some amazing memories which I will treasure."

Before adding, "I can’t thank everyone enough for their support for us as a couple during and after Love Island. We will remain good friends and I wish nothing but the best for her."

Many fans felt that Luca's statement hinted at being unaware that Gemma was going to announce their breakup on that day, especially as he said, 'I would have liked some time to process this privately'—however hopefully things have remained amicable, as Luca assured fans they will remain 'good friends.'

This news may have come as a shock to fans, as the pair were posting loved-up snaps just a week prior. Luca for instance posted a picture of him and Gemma enjoying bonfire night together, with the caption: "Experiencing another first with you @gemowen_1 - Bonfire night ✔️🎇"

When did Luca ask Gemma to be his girlfriend?

Despite their breakup news, the pair did actually makes things official after leaving the villa, with Luca asking Gemma to be his girlfriend in August.

Unlike several of their fellow islanders, the couple decided to wait until they were clear of the villa before they became exclusive—which while a great idea, did mean Luca had to up his game when it came to popping the all-important question.

We're relieved to say that he rose to the occasion and treated Gem to quite the romantic gesture.

Luca took to his Instagram Reels to share the special moment and clearly spared no expense. In the video, we saw him leading Gemma through a corridor decked out with red roses and candles, to a pool—which had balloons floating on the surface of the water that read 'Be my girlfriend.' Oh, and did we mention that there was a cellist playing?

Gemma was clearly delighted as she mouthed, 'Oh my God' before hugging him. He then handed her a Cartier bag—Lucky Girl! Inside was a gold bangle, which he helped her put on before the pair shared a kiss.

Taking to her own Instagram, Gemma shared a series of snaps from the girlfriend proposal and wrote: "Finally official ❤️Thank you @lucabish for such a special night!🥰"

Their fellow islanders were quick to congratulate them, with Love Island winner Ekin-Su commenting: "Luca did well 👏❤️congratulations."

With Paige adding: "About time 😍😍😍"

Did Luca met Gemma's dad?

Luca finally met Gemma's famous footballer dad after he flew out to meet her at the family's Quinta Do Lago property.

It seems their first meeting went swimmingly, with Gemma revealing exactly how it all went down on Capital Breakfast

She said: "It was so nice! We got away for four days, it was a bit of like, got a bit of content, bit of chill time but yeah it was a really nice environment for him to meet everyone. They all get on really well and how he was with my brothers and sisters as well, like, so cute."

Since returning to the UK, the pair have shared a number of sweet moments like this, with Luca even watching Gemma show off her dressage skills—they've even hinted at moving in together at some point, but since they have only just gone offish, we won't hold our breath for that happening any time soon.

What's next for Gemma and Luca?

As we know, the pair are now broken up—leaving just Dami and Indiyah, Ekin-Su and Davide and Tasha and Andrew still together after the 2022 series. That being said though, they still have bright futures ahead, thanks to their reality TVstint, despite now going solo...

When it comes to their careers, things are coming up aces with Gemma landing a mind-blowing six-figure deal with Pretty Little Thing to become their newest brand ambassador.

Opening up about the deal to the Mail Online, Gemma said: "This really is a dream come true for me. I wore PrettyLittleThing throughout my time on the show and now being announced as one of their newest ambassadors alongside some incredible talent including Love Island alumni is really special.

“The team has been amazing and I’m excited to get to work and start designing some collections for you all.” We can wait to see what she has in store for us—perhaps we'll even get a collection of Gemma's famous sunglasses? A gal can dream...

As for Luca, he recently created a style edit with London-based brand Prevu and there's likely more where that came from!
