Want to calculate your platinum birthday? TikTok's got you covered
What is a platinum birthday, TikTok's latest trend? Here's what you need to know
What is a platinum birthday, TikTok's new viral challenge? Put down the white nail polish and leave the mascara trend for another time—the video-sharing app has moved on to the latest hot thing.
If you're looking for an excuse to celebrate—or feel old—we have just the trend for you. One of the latest trending hashtags on TikTok has made its way to countless FYPs, but no one is exactly sure what to make of it. A golden birthday? Sure, we know of it—but a platinum birthday? Let's dive in to see what Gen Z's talking about now.
What is a platinum birthday?
TikTokers are keen on calculating their platinum birthday, which is the year when you turn the last two digits of your birth year (not day).
To show an example, we'll take my birthday: March 18, 1990—smack dab between St. Patrick's Day and St. Joseph's Day. The last two digits of my birth year are 90, so I'm attempting to calculate the year I will turn 90. So, my platinum birthday—when I turn 90 years young—will be March 18, 2080. Will TikTok still be around then? Here's hoping!
If you're a millennial like myself, chances are you should get planning because your platinum birthday is on its way (albeit slowly). Should you fall into the Gen Z category and have a birthday after 2000, we hate to burst your bubble, but your platinum birthday has passed...but there are still other reasons to celebrate. (Promise!)
What is a golden birthday?
For those who are not pleased to learn that they're out of a birthday party, rest assured there are other opportunities to celebrate, even if those platinum birthdays are long gone.
A golden birthday, another TikTok favorite, celebrates the day you were born. Since I was born on March 18, I rang in the occasion during my senior year of high school.
What is a silver birthday?
We'd like to tell you that this is the last chance you have for a birthday bash, but it's likely your silver birthday is also long gone. A silver birthday is the year you turn the age of the month you were born, so this means we only have 12 options for celebrating.
If you ask us, all birthdays are worth celebrating, whether or not they come with a milestone attached. Should the latest TikTok fad leave sad results, might we recommend tuning into the other fun things floating around the platform? We're particularly enamored with the Korean blush nail trend and currently scoping out a fun candle warmer lamp that has been making the rounds on FYPs. (Maybe you should ask for one for your birthday—no matter which one's coming up!)
