It will come as no surprise that pretty much all of the 2022 beauty trends have originated from social media—from the sunkissed blush trend to the ‘Jello skin’ trend—and now the must-have look taking over TikTok this summer is all about harnessing the sun. Meet the ‘Golden Hour’ makeup trend and get ready to glow like never before…

Golden hour refers to that afternoon light when the sun is at its most golden, making everything it touches a warm, glowy amber. Selfie takers will be familiar with chasing those bronzy rays for the perfect summer snap.

The Golden Hour makeup trend combines this aesthetic with the already viral clean-girl dewy makeup look, with the addition of some very shimmery eyeshadow.

How to achieve the 'Golden Hour' makeup trend

While creating a sun-inspired beauty look might sound complicated, it’s actually pretty straightforward and lightweight—which is ideal for summer.

Tori Rosero, makeup artist and founder of Glowblade Academy explains that the first step to this look is a beautiful, fresh base.

The ‘glow from within’ look is key, so make sure you’re spending time on your skincare routine. Rosero recommends gently massaging your face for lymphatic drainage as well as double cleansing, to make sure your skin is super clean and free of any dirt. Then you want to apply a hydrating face cream like one of the best moisturizers for dry skin, eye cream and face mist followed by your favorite sunscreen for your face—because we want that sun-soaked look but minus the damage.

Now onto makeup, Rosero suggests a lightweight, natural-looking foundation—preferably a non-comedogenic foundation. She also recommends mixing in a liquid foundation for extra glow—or you can opt for TikTok’s favorite viral product: Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter which you can apply before your foundation, mix with it or use on its own.

RRP: $44/£36 for 30ml

The worst kept secret for glowy, dewy skin. The Flawless Filter comes in 12 shimmering shades and can be used as a glowy base, as a lightweight foundation, or as a highlighter. It's the ideal product if you want that 'glass-like' skin look.

Once your base is on you want to follow up with a liquid highlighter. Rosero says to go from mostly cream products for this look, to really get that dewy sunshiny skin. Apply your liquid highlighter to all the high points of your face, like your cheekbones and nose bridge.

RRP: $40/£30 for 13.5ml

This stunning highlighter comes in four shades and can either be added to your foundation for an extra glow or used for a pinpoint highlighter.

Then you want to apply bronzer to your cheeks—Rosero says: “For that just stepped off the beach, bronzed look, find a bronzer which has a slight shimmer to it, again not too matte, which you can brush over your cheekbones, nose and forehead, to replicate sun-kissed, beachy skin.“

Then to finish off your Golden hour look, brush a shimmery gold or copper eyeshadow over your lids, use your finger for a really natural look or a fluffy brush.

Viola! You’re summer-ready.

How to get 'Golden Hour'-ready skin?

If you think your skin needs a bit of TLC before you attempt this look, Holly Zoccolan, Nutritional Health Coach & Founder of The Health Zoc says your diet can be a great place to start.

She says: “Avocados are high in healthy fats which are essential to keep your skin looking plump and hydrated whilst also preventing your skin from aging. Avocados are also high in Vitamin E.”

Holly also added that green leafy vegetables like broccoli and spinach are rich in ALA (alpha-lipoic acid) which fights free radicals and is anti-aging.

She also adds: “ALA has also been shown to reduce under-eye puffiness and have an anti-inflammatory effect on your skin. Green leafy vegetables are also high in Vitamin A, C, E and chlorophyll which enable the skin to retain its moisture.”
